The creative power of every woman shapes the face of our city

The beginning: 8. 3. 2026 | 14:30 h

The place: House of Music

Address: Panenska 11, Bratislava

Organizer: Bratislava Cultural and Information Center

Contexts: Women also shape the story of Bratislava

The story of the city is actually the story of our collective memory. We walk through Bratislava every day and orient ourselves by the names of the streets that have become part of our everyday lives. But if we look at the streets through the lens of gender balance, we will see a story that is only partially told. For almost 622 streets bearing male names in our city is only 21, which refer to women. This disparity is not just a statistic, but a silent testimony to whose voices we have chosen to listen to throughout history and whose contributions we have become accustomed to overlooking.

Within the cycle Contexts you are therefore on the occasion International Women's Day We illuminate the invisible trail of women who have shaped the character of our city for generations. However, their contribution goes far beyond the boundaries of street signs. We also want to pay tribute to women who have never made it into the official nomenclature, although their courage, work and presence have fundamentally shaped life in Bratislava. In the traditionally male narrative of history, it is time to recognize a value that has remained in the background for too long, and to grant women their rightful place in the identity of our common space.

We invite you March 8th to the House of Music, where we will complete this story with the missing chapters together. The program will bring thematic walks, discussions, exhibitions, literary zones, lectures and concerts - moments in which we celebrate not only the names from textbooks, but the creative power of every woman who shapes the face of our city. Come with us to search for the connections we walk along every day, because The identity of the city is the work of all of us.

A children's corner will be available throughout the day at the House of Music.
