A Date with the City lecture: In the Shadow of Genius: Women in the Life of WA Mozart II.

The lecture is part of the event Contexts: Women also shape the story of Bratislava on the occasion of International Women's Day.

In the year of Mozart's anniversary, we will mentally bring back to the stage the musicians, singers, and students with whom this musical genius performed. We know about them mainly thanks to him, but the opposite is also true: they played and sang his music and brought it to the audience even after his death. 

Some of them were famous and successful composers in their time, and their compositions are being revived today: Marianna Martinesová, the blind Maria Theresia Paradisová and Mozart's pupil Josepha Auernhammerová. For the singers Nancy Storaceová, Catarina Cavalieriová and Josefína Dušková, Mozart wrote arias exactly according to their vocal dispositions. The diverse musical environment of the 18th century was also completed by traveling virtuosos, and there will not be a single successful piano builder missing.

The story of the city is actually the story of our collective memory. We walk through Bratislava every day and orient ourselves by the names of the streets that have become part of our everyday life. But if we were to look at the streets through the lens of gender balance, we would see a story that is only partially told. Of the almost 622 streets bearing male names in our city, only 60 refer to women. This disparity is not just a statistical figure, but a silent testimony to whose voices we have chosen to listen to in history and whose contributions we have become accustomed to overlooking.
