Contexts – The Story of the August 1968 Occupation

BKIS you are in a cycle Contexts will commemorate the anniversary of the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops. Bratislava, as a political and cultural center, felt the invasion of the troops most drastically. The night of August 20-21 is etched in the history of the city and determined the political direction of our country for decades to come. 

BKIS will commemorate these events by screening two important films.

 The documentary film will provide an authentic account of the events in the streets, the dramatic clashes between Bratislava residents and Russian soldiers and tanks, the strong emotions felt when they reached out for their rights and freedom, and the growing uncertainty. Black days. They were involved in directing it Ladislav Kudelka, Milan Cernak, Stefan Kamenicky a Ctibor Kovac. The film will be personally introduced by one of the directors, Milan Černák. 

It will be followed by a feature-length debut at 20:00 PM.  322  with personal introduction directed by Dušan Hanák a film critic Katarína Mišíková. Filming began in the year of occupation and was completed in 1969. The film is a bold indictment of the regime, which after filming evaluated it as antisocial and demoralizing. Due to its indirect criticism of the system, it became a safe film for 20 years and the first viewers were able to see it only in 1988. Slovak film critics called it the best Slovak film of the 20th century.

The event was created in cooperation with the Slovak Film Institute.
