November '89 Memorial: Steps That Took Back the Space

Freedom Square was once designed as a tool of control. Concrete corridors were meant to disperse crowds, and raised areas were “no-go zones” where no citizen was allowed to set foot. But in November 1989, people crossed these boundaries. It is on this spot that the November '89 Memorial as a memento of the courage that changed the course of our history.
Hundreds of brass footprints embedded in concrete are not decoration – they are a reminder of the physical act of freedom. They are proof that real power in a state does not come from the inaccessible backstage of power, but from the will of citizens to step out of the zone of silence. At BKIS, we see this place as a symbol of a living culture that must protect and redefine freedom at all times.
This symbolic return to our shared responsibility was created with the support of Slovak Savings Bank Foundation. Stories about the importance of freedom can be found at slobodajevasa.sk.
