Do you know when our city first became the capital?
The answer:
Already in 1536, when it became the capital of Hungary.
Prešporok officially became the capital of Hungary in 1536. This happened on the basis of the legal article No. 49, which was adopted by the Hungarian Diet. In it, the monarch Ferdinand I. declared Prešporok the administrative center of the country, the seat of the Diet and the most important royal offices. The original capital of Hungary, Buda, was occupied by the expanding Ottoman Empire after the Battle of Mohács (1526). Prešporok lay far enough to the north, protected by the Little Carpathians, the Danube and the city walls, thanks to which the Turks never conquered it. The city was located very close to Vienna, which was the main seat of the new Hungarian rulers from the Habsburg dynasty. The Hungarian Royal Chamber, the Governor's Council moved to the city, and the Hungarian Diet regularly met here.
From 1563, St. Martin's Cathedral became the official coronation church. Prešporok served as the capital until 1783, when Joseph II had the central offices moved back to Buda, although the Hungarian Diet met sporadically in the city until 1848.
