Will we find Bratislava on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List?

The answer:

Roman military camp Gerulata in the city district of Rusovce

Since 2021, Bratislava has had its own, highly valued inscription – the Roman military camp of Gerulata in Rusovce. It was inscribed on the UNESCO List as part of the transnational site of the Borders of the Roman Empire – Danube Limes (western part), which Slovakia shares with Germany and Austria. It is an archaeological excavation of an ancient military camp that existed from the 1st to the 4th century AD. Gerulata was an integral part of the northern defensive line of the Roman Empire (the so-called Limes Romanus). It served as a key defensive point against attacks by barbarian tribes from the empire from beyond the Danube. Today, it houses an open-air museum managed by the Bratislava City Museum, where the foundations of Roman buildings, wells, graves and many rare finds from coins, jewelry to fragments of Roman weapons have been revealed.
