First played others
At the outset, we will probably surprise many with the information that our city theater had absolutely no repertoire of its own at the beginning. To compensate for this, it decided to initially offer its visitors the most famous works of surrounding theaters from Slovakia and the Czech Republic. As part of this, such greats as Martin Huba, Robo Roth, Božidara Turzonovová, Anna Javorková, as well as Czech actors – Dagmar Havlová – Veškrnová, Ivana Chýlková, Miroslav Donutil and many others – performed at the MDPOH theater.
As the years passed, the potential of its own repertoire gradually grew, and today, in its 10th season, our city theater can boast a truly diverse offer of performances for all ages. The very first play that kicked off the theater's anniversary year was The Gingerbread Lady, which was also its last produced premiere from the spring of this year. The bitter-funny comedy from the pen of the most successful American playwright Neil Simon depicts several human lost existences that experience the horror of social status.
The most successful were surprisingly fairy tales
The theatre has always belonged and belongs to the child audience, who can express their joy from an honestly performed performance in perhaps the most beautiful way. In 2012, the MDPOH theatre also presented its own fairy tale performance - The Three Little Pigs. The director's chair, as well as the lyrics, was taken on by the excellent Róbert Mankovecký, and the main roles of the wolf, the fox and the little pigs were performed by well-known Slovak actors - Henrieta Mičkovicová, Milo Kráľ, Juraj Hrčka, Martin Kaprálik and David Hartl. The number 80 is especially pleasing, expressing the number of successfully performed premieres, which are still not approaching their end.
Close behind it is another children's show - The Horned Goat, which was also created under the direction of Róbert Mankovecký and has so far had 50 repeat performances.
Moliere would certainly be happy
Among other plays that have been deeply engraved in the hearts of hundreds of satisfied visitors and are still being performed on the stages of our city theater, we should definitely mention the ageless French classic by the famous Moliere - The Healthy Sick Man, which has been fantastically portrayed by Ľuboš Kostelný for years.
Perhaps this was the motive for director and screenwriter Roman Polák, who decided to take charge of the preparations for the current premiere – Circus Scapin, which was also the work of the French comedy master and was thematically based on the original Scapin's Mischief. The new premiere is scheduled for Friday, October 26.
We will bring you more about the premiere itself, as well as the feelings immediately after the performance, in our next blog.
