music

The story of the Night of Music festival (Fête de la Musique) began over 30 years ago in France. In 1982, the Ministry of Culture conducted a survey. It revealed that five million people in the country, and almost every second young person, played a musical instrument. The then minister therefore initiated an event that would allow musicians to showcase their talent. He invited residents to play music outdoors in their neighborhoods, parks, or public spaces. The result exceeded all expectations. They played on the streets, squares, courtyards, gardens, stations, and squares, and thousands of people wandered the streets in a good atmosphere until late at night. The Fête de la Musique became a phenomenon that was taken over by several cities in Europe and gradually established itself in America, Africa, and Australia. The Night of Music festival is now held on the same date every year in more than 120 countries around the world.

Bratislava also comes alive with a night of music every year.

Since 2023 The festival is organized by the Bratislava Cultural and Information Centre (BKIS) in cooperation with partners. The Night of Music will open the largest and oldest Bratislava festival, Bratislava Cultural Summer, from 2023. The Night of Music will not take place in Bratislava in 2025.

Music Night has the ambition to unite all types of music without a hierarchy of genre. During the Night of Music, you can hear electric tango, jazz, reggae, indie, classical music, folk, blues and rock on the streets of Bratislava, as well as street drumming, marching bands and DJs.

Music is played in various traditional and less usual places. In recent years, it has been on the Main Square, in the gazebo on Hviezdoslavovo Square, in the courtyard on Bielá 6, or on the stairs on Klariská.
