A Date with the City: The Transformation of Grössling Island

The long-extinct branches of the Danube once formed numerous islands and islets in Prešpork, including the legendary Grössling. However, they did not disappear completely, and their route is still followed by beautiful streets. The construction of the Franz Joseph Bridge in 1890 was the impetus for the creation of a new quarter. The transition from the monarchy to the Czechoslovak Republic brought the need for new institutions, schools, banks and insurance companies, and facilities for the administrative tasks of Bratislava as the center of Slovakia. Where in the 18th century there were mainly meadows, gardens and orchards, a new Danube Quarter began to emerge, which gradually became Bratislava's financial center. During the tour, you will discover the stories of Šafárik Square, Bezručová, Grösslingová or Štúrová Street.
