St. Martin´s Cathedral

This three-nave Gothic church was constructed in the 14th century on the site of an original Romanesque church. It was consecrated in 1452, and from 1563 to 1830 was the coronation venue for 11 Hungarian kings and 8 royal consorts. As a monument to the coronations, a gold-plated replica of the Crown of St. Stephen sits atop the tower’s peak. St. Martin’s Cathedral was damaged by war and a powerful earthquake, and took on its present semblance in 1849. Inside the cathedral, one can admire the set of baroque sculptures of St. Martin by Austrian sculptor G. R. Donner, as well as Gothic and Renaissance tombstones, stained glass windows and octagonal columns. In the crypts beneath the Cathedral lie the graves of notable church dignitaries and members of the aristocracy. Famous musical works by world composers were performed in St. Martin’s Cathedral, such as Ludwig van Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Franz Liszt’s Esztergom Mass and Coronation Mass.
