The oldest university established in the territory of Slovakia. It was founded by Matthias Corvinus on 19 May 1465. It began operating two years later with four faculties: theology, law, medicine and art (philosophy). A humanistic and scholastic atmosphere prevailed at the school, which placed emphasis on natural sciences, mathematics, astronomy and medicine. Until 1472 it was led by Ján Vitéz as Chancellor of the university, and also by Bratislava Prior Juraj von Schönberg. Following the capture of Vienna by Matthias Corvinus, and the death of Juraj von Schönberg, the gradual decline of the university ensued. It ultimately closed its doors in the wake of the death of Matthias, who had financed its operation. The building is now the seat of the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts.
