International guitar festival of J. K. Mertz is an event with thirty years long history and inherently belongs to renowned events of the Summer of Culture in Bratislava. Besides Slovak artists which are regular participants of the festival the festival is visited also by dozens of guest artists from all over the Europe, Asia or America. The festival is annually organized since 1976 and therefore it belongs to the oldest festivals of its kind in the world. Thanks to constant support from Bratislava city the festival brings world-class guitar art at those places where J. K. Mertz, a composer, guitar player virtuoso and author of many opuses of early-romantic guitar music, was brought up and recorded first successes 200 years ago. Besides full-length concerts organized in representative premises of Old Town accompanying events are organized in the premises of the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts which are dedicated to professional audience, students and fans of guitar music. They can visit mastership courses lead by foreign guests, afternoon concerts of young artists as well as seminars and exhibitions concerning guitar music. Festival’s aim is to bring interesting and various dramaturgy every year which is in few past years also oriented on other than classical positions of guitar like old music, jazz or flamenco. International guitar festival of J. K. Mertz is every year visited by large audience consisting of guitar fans, ordinary tourists and incidental visitors.
